Groom's Cottage - Places to Visit

Neighbouring Waters Upton Church

Birthplace of Industry and more

Shropshire is the largest inland county in England, filled with traditional market towns surrounded by rolling countryside.

Odd then, that it's also the 'Birthplace of Industry', with Ironbridge the central focus of it's rich industrial heritage.

There are links below to whet your appetite for Shropshire. Brochures are available at the house and be sure to ask Paul or Kevin for recommendations.

Shropshire

We are a short drive away from the historic county town of Shrewsbury. Also the pretty market towns of Newport, Wellington and Market Drayton. There are plenty of delightful small villages to discover, with sandstone churches dating back to the 11th Century and excellent traditional pubs. Also nearby is the significant tourist attraction of Ironbridge Gorge. Here, the World's first bridge of iron was built and the industrial revolution began. Whether walking, shopping or visiting museums, there's plenty to do for families, couples and visitors on business.

Surrounding regions

Shropshire is bounded by Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Cheshire and Wales. The county town of Chester is well worth a visit, including its city walls and the zoo. A visit to Wales might include the town of Llangollen or Powys Castle. Birmingham is between forty minutes and an hour's drive away.

The Ironbridge Gorge You could spend days just wandering round in the Ironbridge Gorge region. Attractions include: The Iron Bridge and Tollhouse, Blists Hill, Enginuity, Coalport china, Tar Tunnel, Tile Museum.

Cosford Air Museum "The Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford houses one of the largest aviation collections in the United Kingdom. Over 70 historic aircraft are displayed in three wartime hangars on an active airfield. The collection spans nearly 80 years of aviation history"

Shrewsbury "Shrewsbury is one of England's finest medieval market towns. But stuck in the past it is not! The town has over 600 listed buildings including the Castle and the Abbey. Relax in beautiful Quarry Park or take a boat trip on the River Severn. You will also find a huge variety of things to see and do in the surrounding countryside."

The Wrekin "The Wrekin is perhaps Shropshire’s best known landmark, a curious legendary hill that, from this way it looks like a mountain, and that way, it crouches low. From the top you can see fifteen counties.

It was also the inspiration for Tolkien's Middle Earth in the acclaimed series of books - The Lord of The Rings."

Hoo Farm "A very warm welcome to award winning Hoo Farm.  There’s so much happening that we can guarantee a great day out in the country for all ages."

Buildwas Abbey "Set beside the River Severn, against a backdrop of wooded grounds a short distance from the Iron Bridge, are the extensive remains of this Cistercian abbey, founded in 1135."

Merrythought Teddy Bears "Merrythought is one of the oldest and most prestigious of England's toy manufacturers. " Although the factory is not open to the public, there is a shop and museum in Ironbridge.

Acton Scott "Acton Scott Historic Working Farm near Church Stretton, demonstrates life on a Shropshire upland farm at the turn of the last century.

Visitors to the popular famly attraction are transported back in time to the days of shire horses, hay ricks and milkmaids."

Ellesmere "Nestling between the Mere and the Canal our little Market Town, flower filled in Summer, has a wide variety of shops to interest the visitor. Many are family owned for several generations;" Telford Town Centre Telford Town Centre, a manufactured commerce and retail hub is the thriving heart of Telford. It boasts a glorious park and lake together with all the well-known high-street shop names.
